Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between "estimate" and "projection"?

Estimates (1950-2023) are the UN's reconstructed historical figures based on observed census, survey, and vital-registration data. Projections (2024-2100) are model-based forecasts under a chosen variant. Every chart marks this boundary with a solid-to-dashed line break, so a forecast is never shown as if it were observed history.

Why do the numbers change when I switch "Variant"?

A variant is a demographic scenario for the future only -- Medium (most likely), High/Low (alternate fertility assumptions), Zero migration, Constant fertility, and so on. Estimate years (1950-2023) are identical no matter which variant is selected; only projection years (2024+) differ.

Is the "Births & deaths" counter real-time data?

No. The UN source only publishes one total per year. This dashboard just divides that annual total evenly across the year's seconds and counts up from when you opened the page -- an illustrative estimate, not a live measurement.

If I add up all the countries myself, why doesn't it match the regional total?

World/Region/Subregion/Income Group rows are aggregates published directly by the UN, not summed here from country rows. "Top countries" and "Population by region" already filter to the correct level so nothing gets double-counted; summing raw rows yourself can double-count depending on which level you mix in.

What does the unit "count" mean for population figures?

The UN source stores population-related indicators in thousands. This dashboard multiplies by 1,000 for display and labels the result "count" (i.e. persons), so numbers are never left ambiguous about their scale.

Where does this data come from?

UN World Population Prospects 2024 revision (population.un.org/wpp), parsed with the open-source wpp-parser tool. This dashboard is a read-only viewer over that data -- it does not modify or estimate any values beyond the unit conversion described above.
